Prairie Band Potawatomi and Aamjiwnaang Powwows

Round Square Leadership Conference at Me To We Facility

Round Square Leadership conference workshop was an amazing time.  We had the opportunity to work with some of the most talented future leaders from around the world. There were about 26 countries represented in this workshop, about 65 students.  We were brought in to highlight native culture and for the team building aspect of our workshops. Because after our workshop they all got to socialize and dance.  During our workshop the teachers joined in the fun and did an amazing job competing.

Having fun sharing our culture through song and dance,  This is our passion our lifestyle!

Some of the welcoming flags representing the various schools,  Amazing it really does start with our youth!!

Naomi enjoying some of the fantastic dancing, she's thinking yup I taught them that lol!

International Dance Day

I wish we were able to celebrate International Dance Day when I was in school.  Wait did it even exist waaaay back then?  No matter, it exists now.  We did a couple of workshops with dance enthusiasts on Friday at Robert Bateman HS in Burlington.  I honestly wish we had more time with each of the groups because there was so much more I wanted to share.  At the end of the morning sessions the students gathered together and shared what they had learned so far.  I for one appreciated being able to see that because I am always so jealous that I don't get to take the other workshops.

On Saturday we went to Runnymeade PS to take part in the Earth Day festivities.  I was blown away by the amount of family involvement in cleaning up and beautifying of the school grounds.  That is really great to see.  A community of people working together.  It was disappointing that we weren't able to use the natural amphitheatre that the school has but we made do with another area of the grounds.  Such a great weekend for us.  I hope you were able to celebrate both Dance day and Earth day.

Powwow Trail - Highlights 2011

We have been very fortunate to be able to travel and see a variety of different sites.  Some of my fav pictures are from Powwowing in New York state, Redhawk American Indian Arts Council. After competing we take time to see the sites, here are a couple.

Being able to travel with the family and share these experiences are what the Powwow Trail is all about.

Yes, that's a real Police car.  Snooki probably got hauled away to jail in it.  We did visit Jersey Shore it has a great beach and lots of rides which is awesome reminds me a little of Santa Monica Pier.

But the Highlight was when we strayed from the powwow trail and did a Canada Day Festival Show in Ankara, Turkey. This pic is me taking a picture of this magnificent globe sphere light in a Mosque in Ankara.  The sheer grandeur of this place of worship is truly amazing!

Here is another view of the Sphere.

And this is the outside of the Mosque, I know it looks fake lol but it truly is huge, probably as wide as a few city blocks!

Smiths Falls, ON

The drive to Smiths Falls is quite beautiful.  We were invited to present at the Celebration of Aboriginal Culture yesterday at the High School.  The Host school and Organizers did a fantastic job.  Not only did they make us feel welcome with this fabulous banner, they also had student volunteers who helped us organize the workshop participants when they arrived.  Thank you so much ladies.  They also had a crew who organized all the sound requirements.  They even arranged for the hospitality class to make us lunch.  All these details being looked after made our day amazing and we appreciated the opportunity to visit with the other presenters during lunch.  All in all it was a great celebration.

Why First Nations cling to their reserves

Why First Nations cling to their reserves

I found this article online today and really connected with it.  That is exactly how I personally feel.  I'm glad someone found a way to so eloquently express it.

2nd Annual Mattagami Powwow, Aboriginal Idol

If you happen to be in Sudbury on National Aboriginal Day you should go and check out Aboriginal Idol.  It looks to be a good time.  If you are eligible to compete you still have time to apply!

This year we will be hitting up the Mattagami powwow at the end of August.  We will be demonstrating some Haudenosaunee style dances including the Smoke dance as well as some powwow demonstrations.  I am really looking forward to this.  I hope to see your smiling faces there too.

Gladys Speers and Jean Vanier

Gladys Speers really showed us some love yesterday.  We spent the whole day in their school and they made things go real smooth.  They have a small gym but we found a way to fit everyone for the Presentation.  Once we got into the workshops we really appreciated the great floor they have.  It is perfect for dancing.  In our last workshop of the day we worked with the Grade 6 classes.  They were fantastic singers and we ended up having a "sing off".  It ended up being a girl vs a boy and the girl is a trained singer.  The boy was really holding his own until his group made him laugh.  Have I mentioned lately how much I love doing this?

Today we were at Jean Vanier in Welland which is a new school.  I believe it opened about 2 years ago.  The builders did a great job with the stage because the surface is fantastic to dance on.  I really enjoyed performing there because they have nice big screens and students willing to run the sound for us.  Talk about spoiled, we only had to show up, get dressed and dance.  No set up or tear down for us.  A girl could really get used to that.  I hope everyone has a great day.

Wahta Mohawk Territory

We were invited to perform at the Community Health Fair in Wahta on Saturday.  I had hoped we would get to see a bit more of the community but we discovered that where we were performing was right off the highway.

We may not have gotten very far into the community but you knew you were someplace cool when the signs were in Mohawk.

How cute is this guy?

I consulted Mapquest to find out how long it would take us to get there.  Well in reality it took about an hour less than what we planned for.  The kids were pretty happy to have some extra time to go and explore.

They ended up having a pretty good time skipping rocks.  I'm not sure who won, Derek or Kristen.

the show went really well.  I was thrilled with how much crowd participation we had.  The people made us feel very at home.  It is so beautiful there.  On another note we are moving.  We will be based out of the Woodland Cultural Centre in Brantford, Ontario.  We are looking forward to moving our office to our new space.
