Algonquin and Lakeshore CDSB

We have been in Eastern Ontario for the past two days. We really love coming out here.  Yesterday at St. Paul CSS a student brought bannock from home to share.  It was really good too.  That sort of thing is what just makes my day.

This morning we were at Sacred Heart in Batawa and they were awesome. The Principal gave us a nice card along with some tobacco.  We appreciate that they knew enough about our culture to know that was an appropriate gift.

Tomorrow is our last day here and I can't wait to see all the people at the two schools we are visiting. Have a great day everyone.

2nd annual Conestoga College Traditional Pow Wow

I had a great time at the powwow yesterday. It was the first one of year for us. What a good warm up for the summer season.

Good friends, good music and good food.  Just plain a good day.

There were a couple of Round dances happening this weekend as well so the turn out was better than expected.

I think everyone's favourite part of any powwow is when the tiny tots dance.  I think Adriel is going to be a singer even though his mom really wants him to be a dancer.

I tried to post some video but the server is too busy.  I will try again shortly.

Canada's Got Talent

Derek appears in the commercial for the upcoming "Canada's Got Talent" show on CityTV.  I have included the link below if you haven't seen it yet.  I love that he appears twice even though both times are literally less than a second so do all your blinking needed before watching the clip or you will miss him both times.

Canada's Got Talent

This was the first time he had been in a real studio and it was impressive.

The whole experience went by so very quickly.  Once he was on set, it was filmed and we were gone.  The crew was so nice and do they ever know what they are doing.  I have no idea how long it took to get everything ready to shoot but once it was ready to go it went fast.

Derek did 4 takes, 2 in full light and 2 in shadow.  They ended up using the shadow shots.  After his first take a fastener on his angora leggings came off and off course its black.  The crew flew over to help him find it so that they wouldn't get behind schedule.

The set was beautiful.  The scenery and lightning were breathtaking.

I was pretty excited to be able to go with him and watch when they filmed.  All the stuff that happens behind the scenes is fascinating to me.  I almost forgot to watch Derek dance because I was watching what everyone else was doing at the same time.

These beautiful girls also appear in shadow in the commercial.  It's unfortunate you don't get to see them more clearly.  The studio they come from can be found through the link below.

Derek is a very social guy, if there are people around he is going to go and talk to them.  Today was no exception.  He just had to meet these two who also appear in shadow on the commercial.  The Cowboy worked with several people from our Reserve long ago in a travelling show.  Talk about a small world.

This experience was so fun for me because I was able to just take it all in.  It was a bit more stressful for Derek because he always wants to do his very best but I think he did a great job.

Knighthawks vs Stealth game

Derek and Ava with the Knightingales

The Rochester Knighthawks played the Washington Stealth on Saturday and we once again danced right before the game.  Ava is the smallest therefore has to really dance hard to not get run over.  At one point in the song I happened to see her just as she danced right out of her moccasin.  You could see on her face she didn't know what to do at first.  She didn't know if she should go back and get it, or just keep dancing.  She made the right choice and kept going.

This was the most exciting game yet.  The Knighthawks won 15 - 12 and the kids were pretty excited and busy discussing the game most of the way home.

I was working really hard on replacing the ribbon on a new shawl for the game but I didn't have quite enough time to get it done.  It will be ready for the next game for sure!  I always seem to underestimate how much time it takes to put ribbon fringe on things.

It's Family Day for most provinces here in Canada so I hope everyone is doing something to take advantage of this day to spend with your loved ones.

Niagara Catholic French School Presentations

Culture & Heritage,  being at these French Speaking schools has been a great experience!  I feel very proud to show off our Native Culture, in essence showing that being proud of your background is cool.  We really appreciate all of these students for  embracing their culture by being able to speak their French language!  This is very encouraging because I see the same thing on our Rez with our Mohawk & Cayuga language schools, it starts with our youth.  Be proud of who you are!

This was the logo of the last school we did on our tour this week.  Just thought I would add to our collection of cool artwork.  This is at Saint Francois.

This eagle mural is pretty amazing.  Have an amazing Family day, whether your doing something elaborate or just relaxing with your family.

CSDCCS performances

We are spending this week doing performances in the Niagara region.  We have a collection of sorts going.  We collect photos of awesome artwork and cool logos from the schools we visit.

I can't remember which school this was in but it was super cute.  inside are a pair of jeans that are attached that you must have to wear to keep this upright.  I didn't have any time to really inspect the thing but it is really creative.

This is from the school we were at this afternoon.  My photo doesn't really do it justice.

I was able to get some video of Derek dancing and Adrian singing during our first show today and I'd say he is pretty darn energetic for 9am.   This was at Notre Dame de la Juenesse.  A little girl gave me a red heart after our performance.  That was really sweet of her.

So yesterday Derek didn't realize I was taping him while he warmed up.  I thought he did good so I'm sharing it with you.  Have a great weekend everyone.

River Oaks PS

We did dance workshops with two groups of Grade 3 students today at River Oaks PS in Oakville ON.  These kids made my day.  They were so energetic and creative I don't think I stopped smiling the whole time I was in their school.  As we were leaving today a music class was practicing "Funky Town".  I love that song, I think this school rocks!

On another note I thought I would post a flyer for the upcoming March break dance camp that will be happening at the Woodland Cultural Centre.  We are not affiliated with this camp however if I was between 9 and 13 I would certainly want to be participating in it.

Completed Beadwork Project

This post is several months in the making.  Derek started this beaded cape for a men's fancy dance outfit in November 2011.  He took pictures throughout the progress and It was completed in January 2012.  He started by making his pattern on tracing paper.

The next step was drawing the patterns onto the canvas after he had cut them out of the tracing paper.

Derek then used a spray adhesive to attach some stiff felt to the back of the canvas.  He thought that the canvas would probably fray too much by the time he had finished the project so he added the felt for some added weight.  Because the project would have to go through the sewing machine at the end he made sure to keep the spray adhesive away from the edges of the beadwork.

Once the backing was attached and the designs were drawn on the canvas he was ready to start beading.

He started by going along the borders and by using a straight stitch to do the detail work.

Once the detail work on the border was completed he then started the fill in for the border.

He used a straight stitch for the entire project.  He did spend the majority of the time doing the fill in with the gun metal grey beads.

Once the cape was completely beaded it was time to add a backing to cover the stitches for both esthetics and longevity of the cape.  Outfit pieces such as this are worn and subject to a lot of use and abuse so you have to make sure to cover the stitches to help cut down on the amount of repairs you have to do over time.

For the backing Derek used some scrap broadcloth that was left over from another project.

The backing was attached with Heat n'Bond and then black bias tape was sew around the whole thing using a decorative stitch on the sewing machine.  Last, ribbon was sewn on and tada - the beaded cape is now ready to be danced in.

The Record

I found this article online from the event with Bob Rae at Conestoga College.  You can read it here.
