ImagineNATIVE film festival opening

The Opening of ImagineNATIVE went really well. The place was filled to capacity and it was a small space to dance but we made due. Yesterday on our run I sprained my ankle and I was very pleased that it held up today. We had to follow a memorial song so the mood was a bit sombre when we started. By the end, I think everyone was in good spirits. I embarrassed myself a bit though. Adrian was on stage doing the MCing and singing while the rest of us were on the floor. Well after our first dance he invited the guys on stage and I piped right up and was like "no, we're next". I didn't let him finish because he was inviting the guys up onstage to help him sing for the girls. I felt just a wee bit foolish but I shook it off. lol.

After the whole the thing was over we met the star of the film "Lani's Story" as well as some of the filmmakers. They came all the way from Australia for the this event. I truly hope we get a chance to catch that film on Sunday.

Are you going to check out the festival?

World Karate Championships

The performance at the World Karate Championships was short and sweet. Chief Montour was there to do a short speech to welcome all the athletes as well as Walter Gretzky, Mayor Hancock, MP Coleman among others.

We were invited to march in the opening with the officials and the athletes. We met this Mountie and marched with him. Well he marched, we meandered. lol.

The first dance we did was a welcome dance. I didn't notice until I was looking at these pictures but we were pretty colourful.

They had these really awesome mats down on the floor for the tournament. They were great to dance on. We didn't have a lot of time to perform but I think we all wanted to just keep dancing.

Rama Powwow

I was so worried that I would be in total pain after this powwow but I am happy to say that I am not. I placed 4th which makes me very happy as well. This powwow is in an arena on the ice. They put gyp-rock over the ice so that it's not slippery but the floor is therefore very very cold. Whenever I wasn't dancing I made sure to keep my feet up off the ground and that worked wonders to stop the cramping of the arches and calves.

We are looking forward to performing at the opening of the World Karate Championships on Friday. I hope we get to stick around and watch for a bit because I bet that will be super interesting.

Upcoming shows

We are really looking forward to working in the schools now that the new year is here. We really enjoy it because it is different everyday. In the workshops we roughly have the same format but you can never really predict what level of creativity the kids will go to.

Leave me a comment or send me an email if you are interested in having us in your school.

Alexander's Public School

I had the best day today at Alexander's Public School. We did a performance and two workshops with the Grade 7 & 8 students. It felt like a monday morning when we started because we haven't done the multimedia show since the end of July and we took a moment to get into the groove but the flow came back and the show went well.

The students all were very enthusiastic about the workshops and that made it a blast for me. In the second workshop we had a sing off. That is a first for us and those girls were fantastic. Wow was I ever impressed. For part of the workshop Adrian teaches about Aboriginal singing and we have the kids learn a very basic song. Well today we had the kids split in two groups and see which group could be more cohesive and loud. Well it was a tie so we had a sing off where each group chose one person to solo. Both groups happened to choose a girl and they were both sooooo good.

At the end of the day a student gave me an origami swan that she had made. What a nice thing to do.

In between workshops Adrian was making beats on his son's DSI. That was pretty cool actually. I hope everyone had a great day!
