Sarnia Powwow

A jamming up a storm at the powwow. She danced so good. I felt so bad when her headband fell off in contest. We'll tape that thing to her head next time. (just kidding).

K danced so good. I was trying to get her to use her arms more and she did great. She took first in both fancy and smoke. Great weekend for her.

J has outgrown his beadwork so I think he has claimed Derek's. lol. I guess I had better get to beading some more stuff! He took two firsts this weekend as well. woo hoo!

I had a great time dancing this weekend. I was bummed I didn't get in there for smoke but at least I placed in fancy.

Adrian jamming hard. He took third in men's fancy. I think we are all looking forward to next weekend in Oneida Wisconsin.

Solidarity Day

So I have this great new camera that I am very happy with but apparently I need to charge the batteries... so I only have this one picture of J dancing at Chiefswood park for Solidarity Day. Darn. It was a beautiful day and I could have taken some really great pictures. I was just happy we were ready to go on time. We had arrived at the park and realized we left J's bustles at home. I rushed over to Frank the sound guy and asked him if we could get bumped back at all and luckily that worked out perfectly. I hurried back to the van and hustled everyone back into the van to zoom home and pick up the bustles. All in all it worked out great.

We were changing to head home but we had to take a moment to check out one of Derek's favourite local bands "Mainline". They did some really great original songs.

Yesterday we were at George Kennedy in Georgetown for Multicultural Day. We did 4 workshops and 2 short dance shows. We were all running a workshop in different places and we barely saw each other all day. My groups were great although we had to work in the library so we were a little cramped. I had a volunteer with the school board with me all day and I was very grateful, she helped me with keeping order as well as working the CD player. I am notoriously bad with electronics. The day went well and they had Janace Henry cater the lunch which was a very pleasant surprise. Her tacos were so good.

Today we were at W F Hewitt in Windham Centre. Wow was that gym ever warm and muggy. I was so happy the kids didn't melt down during the show or the workshop. Those kids were fantastic. I think if I had to sit there for an hour I would have keeled over and fell asleep. I always pass out in the heat and take loooonng naps. lol.

Well we are looking forward to Sarnia powwow this weekend as well as the Canada Day festivities next week. We will be in Ancaster for the Dundas Rotary Pancake Breakfast at 9:45 am and then on to Downsview Park for 1:30, 2:30 and 4:30. We are planning something pretty special for the 4:30 performance so if you can make it you should come!

Ps. Did you feel the earth quake today?

Mississauga Waterfront Festival

It was a beautiful day to be performing you couldn't ask for better weather. The fact that the stage was covered saved us from frizzle frying in the baking sun. We were chased out of the tiny changing tent by another group which was going on after us so we did feel a bit like bacon in between our sets. All greasy...lol. Smoothtown singers came along and sang for us and they were awesome. I love performing to a live drum it is sooo much better than to a cd.

No Derek is not drop kicking his son. They are both taking part in a demonstration of the smoke dance where we allowed the audience to come on stage and try it with us. I love this picture, I think I may print it out myself.

Just so you know, this was not the group that chased us out of the change tent. I didn't really get a chance to speak with them and I didn't get their name but they were great. I really enjoyed them. They really got the crowd in a party mood.

K got to meet Oprah, and answer some trivia/jokes about farm animals. That was really cute. All in all it was a great festival and I am really glad we were a small part of it.

On another note entirely...wow, just watched portugal whoop up on Korea 7-0.

Agnes Hodge

I can't wait for my hair to grow so that I can have braids again. lol. I had a (real) job in an office environment and so I had cut it off but now I really miss it.

We were at Agnes Hodge school today and boy oh boy those kids were awesome. The gym was quite warm so I thought for sure we would lose their attention but they were great. We did a dance and singing workshop with the grade 1 class first and those little guys were so much fun. I really enjoyed working with them. For the dance presentation for the whole school we used the equipment room as our back stage/ change area. It worked out great because the room was air conditioned. I was hit by a wall of heat everytime I had to perform but all in all I loved that set up. That school has a really good gym.

I forgot to take any pictures yesterday when we were at Princess Elizabeth school. Last year Adrian had been a part of a music program that worked with a lot of students from that school so he knew a bunch of the kids already. They were so creative in the dance portion of the workshop it was great.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. Come see us in Mississauga on Sunday at the Mississauga Waterfront Festival.

Doverwood show

Can you tell I just finished Hoop dancing? My cheeks are so pink!

The show and workshop went quite well today. We are getting the set up of the equipment down so that it doesn't take as long anymore. That is by far the hardest part of performing. But it is all worth it. We are off to Princess Elizabeth school tomorrow. We will be at Mississauga Waterfront Festival on Sunday and at the Aboriginal Day festivities on Monday at Chiefswood Park in Ohsweken. If you are in either of those areas come check us out and say Hi!

Woodman - Cainsville School

We had a great day at the school today. Wow it could have been a disaster. When we arrived we realized we didn't have Derek's bustles. luckily the school is in the city we live in so he hurried across town and picked them up. while he was gone Adrian and I put the sound system together. The system is still pretty new as we have been renting previous to this. Well as we are setting up we realize we are missing a cord! As soon as Derek is back I rush out and hustle over to The Source to pick up the proper cord. I was still able to get myself ready in time that the show wasn't delayed. phew, it pays to triple check your gear kids...

My early bday present

We have a decent camera, now the trick will be to learn how to use it properly. Here are a couple of shots from us playing around with it in the back yard. I look forward to not using the camera on the phone any longer. We have a very busy next few weeks and I am very excited about it. Come and see us at the Mississauga Waterfront festival on June 20 at 12:20 and 3:30. We will have the Smoothtown singers with us so this should be a fun show to check out.

Grand River Rafting Workshop

The weather held out nicely for the first workshop that we did with Grand River Rafting. When we arrived they had their chairs all set up around a fire with a nice space for us to dance inside the circle. I felt a little bad about immediately making them move but there was just absolutely no way we were going to be dancing around the fire. I told them that they would be doing their fair share of dancing so they would understand very soon that dancing around the campfire was just artistic license taken by some long ago movie directors.

The group was great, they all got involved and danced with us. I had a lot of fun sharing some dance steps with them. When it was done we talked with some people after and one lady said she enjoyed it because if you have never had any experience with dance let alone native dance you might be inclined to think that the dancers are just hopping around and hollering. After spending 30 minutes trying some very basic moves it gives you a real appreciation for the athleticism that is involved. I was so happy to hear that because that was our exact intention when we started this. For myself, I want people to come away with an appreciation for dance and for them to find similarities to their culture and in that an interest in their own history.

We have been trying to find a good boom box to use at these workshops because there is no power to be had. We bought one thing and took it back it was too awkward. Next we bought a contraption for use on a jobsite. It's not loud enough so that's going back. The search continues....

Markham GreenPrint Launch

It was a beautiful day to be celebrating the sustainability plan for the City of Markham. We performed right after Mayor Frank Scarpitti spoke today. The show was very short but also quite fun. We didn't realize the size of the Fesitval and I didn't bring any money with me. dang. There were quite a few vendors and some really cute stuff. It's probably a good thing I didn't bring money.

We met these two young girls from Tarana Dance Company and they were great. They did a medley of Bollywood dances. I enjoyed it. One of the girls asked me if we had ever been in schools because she recognized me from a few years back. That was really cool.

Getting our stuff together to perform with Lost Dancers tomorrow evening. We have a very busy few weeks lined up. Since school is about to be finished for the year we are cramming in a bunch of shows. I Love It! Once again my apologies for the terrible picture quality. I hope you are having a wonderful weekend.

Yes, that's L in the interview. You can see K and A dancing as well. So proud. You can see my dad when they introduce Renee, his head goes in the shot a couple of times. lol. At the end you can see Derek and J dancing a bit too.

Beadwork, beadwork, beadwork

Derek found this great fabric and he had wanted a shirt made from it for months. Well it was at the bottom of my to-do list because he already had a bunch of shirts. Well he found a solution. There is a really cool little shop tucked away in a small plaza in Ohsweken called "More than Traditions". He had this shirt made there and it was an unbeatable price and they had it done superfast. It came out much better than if I made it for him so we're pretty happy with it. There are some really cute beadwork pieces in the shop as well. I like going there because there is always something new.

I am busy working on new moccasins for L. His are pretty rugged. I hope to have them done by the weekend. I doubt I'll have the soles on and stuff but I hope I at least have the actual beading finished. It is such a beautiful day I think I'll go and work on these in the backyard and get some fresh air. I am looking forward to the next powwow for us but it is busy season for us with all the kids sports. I am unsure what our next one will be. At least we have some dance shows lined up which will at least get us dancing.
